Is Bosnia-Herzegovina falling apart? Moscow supports efforts to secede the Bosnian Serbs. We are talking about the danger of war. Christian Schmidt, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the situation in the Western Balkans.

The CSU politician Christian Schmidt gained experience in political trench warfare as State Secretary in the Defense Ministry and Agriculture Minister before he became High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina in August 2021. As the top overseer of the international community for the politics of the country torn from the war from 1992 to 1995, Schmidt has been working “in full crisis mode” since his first day: The Moscow-backed Bosnian Serbs threaten to build their own army and split from the common state with Muslims Bosniaks and Croats – on December 10th, the parliament of the Republika Srpska (RS) passed resolutions accordingly. Schmidt receives them South German newspaper in his official seat in Sarajevo for an interview in the evening – beforehand he met the new British ambassador to the Balkans and put one crisis meeting behind him after the other.
