Interns Strike, Unemployment Insurance Vote, and Republicans Take Back the House

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

Since the demonstration of October 14, the anger against the government’s policy on medical deserts has not subsided among interns and medical students. They are indeed again called upon to demonstrate and strike, this Thursday, at the call of organizations of medical students (Anemf) and interns (Isni and Isnar-IMG). They protest against the addition of a fourth year of internship in general medicine, which must be carried out “as a priority in areas where the medical demography is under dense”, according to the Social Security financing bill (PLFSS ). Its article 23 is in the crosshairs of interns, as are several bills aimed at regulating the installation of doctors.

The new way of calculating unemployment insurance is about to take its final form. The Parliament must definitively adopt this Thursday the bill paving the way for a modulation of this one according to the economic situation. The senators must ratify at the end of the morning, by a final vote, a compromise found with the deputies on this text, which did not require the government to resort to 49.3 thanks to an agreement reached with the right. Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt’s bill initially plans to extend the current unemployment insurance rules. It also triggers the possibility, by decree, of modulating certain rules of unemployment insurance so that it is “stricter when too many jobs are unfilled, more generous when unemployment is high”, according to the campaign promise of Emmanuel Macron.

Joe Biden is going to have half a thorn in his side to complete his term. The Republicans have indeed regained control of the House of Representatives, according to American media on Wednesday, which gives them blocking power over White House policy until 2024. The Democrats having succeeded in retaining the Senate, Congress is now divided. However, the Conservative Party will only have a very narrow majority in the lower house, far from the “giant wave” promised by Donald Trump, who nevertheless announced a new candidacy for the White House on Tuesday evening. The Republicans “are ready to act”, welcomed their leader in the House, Kevin McCarthy, now a favorite in the race for the head of this assembly, the current “speaker” Nancy Pelosi having lost her Democratic majority.
