International Women’s Day: These films on Netflix and Co. convey female power

March 8th is International Women’s Day. In 2024, the World Day to honor emancipated, independent and equal women will take place for the 113th time. And even though a lot has already happened in favor of the female sex since the beginning of the fight for the right to vote and equal opportunities for women workers, there is still a lot to be done to achieve final equality between the sexes.

Films play their part in this – not in terms of rights, but rather in the perception of existing problems in today’s world. Greta Gerwig recently achieved this with the live-action adaptation of “Barbie,” in which the famous doll not only fights a battle of the sexes with Ken, but also struggles with cellulite, depression, insecurities and, beyond that, toxic masculinity.

On International Women’s Day: Barbie also struggles with insecurities, cellulite and toxic masculinity

The message: Barbie’s everyday life is not perfect either, but rather is characterized by common problems faced by modern girls and women. However, it is also within their power to stand up for themselves – and beyond that, to accept themselves (with all their flaws). The message is underlined with lots of female empowerment feelings and female power moments.

Films don’t always have to be incredibly profound to achieve that “strong woman” feeling. Sometimes just the feeling you get when you look at it is enough – and it makes you feel connected and seen as a woman.

From “Barbie” to “Black Panther”: You can see the best female empowerment films for a “strong woman feeling” in the photo series above. Want more depth? Here You will find other great films about strong women.
