From the ragged look to the it-piece: On January 21st we celebrate International Sweatpants Day.

“Anyone who wears sweatpants has lost control of their life,” criticized designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019). In fact, the wide-cut bottoms with elastic bands were frowned upon by fashion experts for a long time. That has now changed. The garment is enjoying increasing popularity and has its own calendar entry. Four Austrian students initiated the “Day of Sweatpants”. On January 21, 2009, she and her entire class decided to show up for class in casual attire. The idea and the associated Facebook event quickly found international appeal. Today more than fifty countries celebrate the day.

With the corona pandemic, sweatpants have experienced an additional upswing and have become a wardrobe favourite. Even the designers can’t get enough of it at the moment and show how versatile it is in their spring/summer collections.

Under The waistline

Until recently, the waistband of trousers reached just below the chest, but in 2022 it will drop well below the navel. Probably the most controversial fashion trend of the noughties, hipsters, are celebrating their big comeback. Not only jeans, but also jogging pants are low-cut this season, for example at the Danish label Ganni. Paired with crop tops they get a sexy upgrade. Combinations with cropped sweatshirts are still en vogue.

It’s a match!

Sets consisting of a matching upper and lower part look well thought out. Keep the rest of the outfit in the same color spectrum for a trendy tone-on-tone styling. Neutral beige or gray is timelessly beautiful, but delicate pastel shades also give rise to premature spring fever. Or how about the trend color of the year, the blue-violet “Very Peri”?

Pretty glamorous

On their triumphal march, jogging pants are even conquering our party wardrobe this year. With sequins or in metallic, Tom Ford and Zimmermann make them the perfect companions for celebrations at home. Glamorous and cozy at the same time. An oversize blazer and heels complete the look.
