Berlin’s Interior Senator praises the cooperation of the police from Berlin and Lower Saxony in the search for former RAF terrorists. But did everything actually go perfectly?

According to information from Berlin’s Senator for the Interior Iris Spranger called it “jerky”. The State Criminal Police Office from Lower Saxony is responsible for the investigation, said the SPD politician on Thursday at the plenary session in the Berlin House of Representatives.

“Jumbling” during the RAF search

The LKA Lower Saxony has been busy searching for the former RAF terrorists Daniela Klette, Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub for over ten years. The Berlin police are of course supporting the search. “That’s why I would like to thank my colleagues. I know there was a lot of hesitation, including public statements about it,” said Spranger.

“Of course I also spoke to my counterpart in Lower Saxony about it,” said the Berlin Senator for the Interior. “There is now good coordination between Lower Saxony and Berlin.” Berlin media had, among other things, reported on criticism from Berlin police circles of their colleagues from Lower Saxony. Even when asked, Spranger did not explicitly address this in the state parliament.

Spranger emphasized Berlin’s share in the most recent operations, such as the investigative work in Klette’s Kreuzberg apartment. “Securing the apartment and the entire house was also supported by Berlin forces,” she said. The Berlin police in particular are very, very experienced in dealing with such crimes. “We now have a good working relationship.”

Klette was arrested on February 26th in her Kreuzberg apartment. She went into hiding more than 30 years ago along with former RAF terrorists Garweg, 55, and Staub, 69. All three belonged to the so-called third generation of the left-wing extremist terrorist organization Red Army Faction, which carried out numerous attacks and killed people until 1991. In 1998 the RAF declared itself dissolved.

Burdock, Staub and Garweg are wanted on suspicion of involvement in terrorist attacks. They are also said to have robbed money transporters and supermarkets in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia between 1999 and 2016 to obtain money. They are also accused of attempted murder because there was a shooting.
