Interior committee on Schönbohm’s dismissal: Union criticizes Faeser’s absence

The Union has sharply criticized Interior Minister Faeser for the renewed absence from the meeting of the Bundestag Interior Committee on the Schönbohm debate. Faeser defends himself: The Union could save itself such a “theatrical thunder”.

The second special session of the Bundestag Interior Committee took place again without Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. The Union faction again sharply criticized Faeser for her absence from the short-term meeting in the Arne Schönbohm case.

“She evaded this opportunity again today,” said the Union faction’s domestic spokesman, Alexander Throm, after the meeting. It shows that the minister never intended to answer questions from the committee. This fuels the suspicion that she has something to hide.

“That is simply unacceptable when there is such a serious suspicion, namely the exploitation of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution for certain purposes,” said Throm. The Union faction is thus reaching its limits “with normal parliamentary means here to obtain clarification from the minister”.

Faeser defends himself against criticism

The scolded Interior Minister also reacted with delay. When presenting her budget in the Bundestag, Faeser clearly rejected the opposition’s criticism. The Union could save itself such a “theatrical thunder,” said the SPD politician.

They are doing their work and have strengthened the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in view of the current threat situation. This also required a reorganization of the top management of the office, said Faeser.

SPD rejects the accusation “instrumentalization” back

The SPD rejected the Union’s allegations that the domestic secret service had allegedly been instrumentalised. It was “outrageous” that the accusation was being made again, said SPD domestic politician Sebastian Hartmann. This was clearly stated again at today’s meeting.

One is confronted with “the fact that the Federal Minister of the Interior has made a decision to recall the President due to a lack of trust, to put him on another equivalent position and a process is being conducted to deal with the duty of care that one could possibly have violated”.

Schönbohm demands compensation

Faeser dismissed Schönbohm as head of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) last year. This is why he is demanding compensation. The minister, who is running as SPD top candidate in the upcoming state elections in Hesse, should therefore be questioned in the interior committee about her approach.
