Josef Klaus, mayor of the municipality of Niederaichbach (Landshut district), has called for financial compensation for all municipalities in which interim nuclear waste storage facilities are located. A sum “of 800,000 to 1.3 million euros per year and municipality is appropriate,” said the local politician to “Welt am Sonntag” (“WamS”). The communities of Gorleben and Ahaus would have received compensation as locations for interim storage facilities. “Why are the other municipalities treated differently?”
Josef Klaus (CSU) is chairman of the Working Group of the Location Communities of Nuclear Facilities in Germany (Asketa). At their meeting in June, the municipalities want to demand compensation from the federal government, Klaus told “WamS”https://www.sueddeutsche.de/bayern/.”The reactors will be dismantled, but the interim storage facilities will continue to exist and no one knows for how long .” The municipalities could not use the areas for other purposes. “These are de facto commercial areas that do not bring in anything but incur costs. The municipalities in which the interim storage facilities are located need compensation for this.”
There is an interim storage facility in Niederaichbach, and the Isar 2 nuclear power plant was in operation in neighboring Essenbach until a year ago. This was one of the last three nuclear power plants in Germany to be taken offline in mid-April 2023. The dismantling of the Isar 2 reactor began at the beginning of April; Isar 1 has been under dismantling since 2017.
