Interim balance sheet – cucumber harvest is in full swing – Bavaria

The cucumber harvest in Lower Bavaria is in full swing, albeit with a slightly lower yield than in previous years. Ingrid Ecker, managing director of the Bavarian Farmers’ Association (BBV) in Landau, draws this interim conclusion. The district of Dingolfing-Landau is the core cucumber area in Bavaria. Green vegetables are also grown on a large scale in the districts of Straubing-Bogen and Deggendorf. The cucumber needs sun and warmth to grow, and especially warm nights, says Ecker. The nights in particular have been comparatively cool in the past few weeks. When it is warm, the cucumbers grow faster, which has had an impact in the very hot summers of recent years. There is currently no prospect of a cucumber surplus for this year. Compared to the first Corona summer, according to Ecker, the cucumber companies have now adjusted to the pandemic. Large corona outbreaks like 2020, in which hundreds of harvest workers were temporarily quarantined in their accommodations, did not occur this year.
