What comes after the 9-euro ticket – the federal government has not really decided so far on this question. But Transport Minister Volker Wissing is at least thinking aloud about the direction things could go: From his point of view, the main thing is to put an end to the “tariff jungle,” as he calls it, that prevails in Germany.

The FDP politician said in the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung”:

When the complicated fare zones disappear and the tickets are valid nationwide, public transport will be used much more.

Wissing left open whether there will still be cheap offers for bus and train after the 9-euro ticket expires at the end of August. Everything will now be evaluated first, and the necessary conclusions will be drawn from autumn.

In any case, the Federal Transport Minister calls the traffic light idea with the cheap ticket for three months a “brilliant success”: There is noticeably less traffic on the streets and significantly fewer traffic jams. Apparently, many people have switched from cars to buses and trains, says Wissing.

According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), as of the end of June, ten million subscribers and around 21 million other customers nationwide had purchased the 9-euro ticket. It entitles buyers to travel throughout Germany on local public transport in June, July and August for nine euros each.
