Threads: How to try out the Twitter competitor despite being blocked in Germany

Actually, the App Threads does not officially exist in Germany. However, it can still be installed on iPhone and Android smartphones without much effort – and then used without any problems.

It is the major attack on Twitter: With the new Threads app, Facebook’s parent company Meta is explicitly attacking its competitor. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri has just confirmed that it was too chaotic and not moderated properly. However, German users will have to be patient: the app will not officially appear in Europe for the time being (learn more here). With a little trick, you can still use it.

The ban for European users seems to be limited to exactly two measures: The associated app is not offered on the respective app platforms, i.e. the App Store for iPhones and the Playstore for Android smartphones, if Threads is not officially supported in the respective country becomes. And when logging in, the IP address is checked once. Both can be avoided without much effort. By the way, you don’t need an extra account: Since Threads is an Instagram app, you simply log in with the picture network account. And that also works without any problems with German accounts.

Install threads: How it works on the iPhone

For iPhone users, the installation is a bit more complex, but it’s not really complicated. All users need is an Apple ID from a country where the app is already available, such as the US or the UK. You can either borrow an acquaintance’s account – there are no costs involved – or create one yourself via the country’s Apple website. All you need is an e-mail address, an address and a telephone number in the respective country. Both can be generated via websites.

Now tap in the App Store – not in the settings! – click your profile picture in the top right and scroll all the way down to log out. Now log in the other account. If Threads is installed, you can switch back to the German App Store.

Installing threads: Here’s how to do it with Android

For Android users, the installation is much easier, but a bit more risky. All you have to do is download the app’s so-called APK file – and then install it via the Playstore. A risk arises because you have to download the file from an external source. For the installation, you also have to allow the option of installing apps from third-party sources – i.e. turn off a security feature. If you download the app from a reputable source and then turn the security function back on, the risk is limited.

How to relocate to USA

Now all you need is a so-called VPN service. It fools websites into believing that you are in the USA. According to some reports, it seems to work even without such a service, just give it a try. If it doesn’t work, any free VPN service that offers a location in the US or the other country selected above will do. Turn on the VPN service and log into her Instagram account. However, because VPN services redirect all Internet traffic, it is advisable to delete the service from the device afterwards if you do not need it for anything else.

By the way, don’t expect too much: Threads is clearly still under construction, the functions are still very rudimentary. Hashtags or a topic search do not exist yet. And the number of German users has so far – unsurprisingly – still been limited.
