Instagram and Facebook temporarily down – Meta reports global disruption

The online services Facebook and Instagram experienced disruptions worldwide on Tuesday. The US parent company Meta said that since 4:30 p.m. CET, users around the world have been having difficulty accessing Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Threads. “We are working on it,” explained Meta spokesman Andy Stone shortly afterwards on the short message service X. The problems have now been resolved.

“We are aware of a problem that is affecting the connection to Facebook,” Meta had previously announced on its own website. “Our engineering teams are actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”

Almost 100,000 disruption reports on Instagram

The Downdetector portal, where users can report disruptions, recorded up to 580,000 reports for Facebook and up to 92,000 for Instagram. Threads, which launched in 2023 as a competing service to X (formerly Twitter), was apparently also affected. Meanwhile, there seemed to be no problems with the Whatsapp service, which also belongs to Meta. After an hour, the number of fault reports fell back to almost zero.

The fact that Meta spokesman Stone commented on the disruptions at Elon Musk’s rival service X caused amusement among the latter. He posted about the disruption: “If you can read this, it’s because our servers are working.”

According to reports from numerous users on Facebook, the login failed when entering their user data. The home page on Instagram no longer updated. Facebook is the largest online network in the world with three billion active monthly users. According to the latest information, Instagram has around 1.35 billion users.
