Instagram and Facebook ad-free – economy

The Internet company Meta will in future offer European customers ad-free access to its online networks Instagram and Facebook. For this, users would have to pay between 9.99 and 12.99 euros per month from March 1, 2024, the US company announced on Monday. You can register for this from November. The offer only applies to people aged 18 and over and to all EU member states and Switzerland. In addition, advertisers would still have the opportunity to display personalized ads in Europe. The US company’s plan had already become known at the beginning of October. Meta is reacting to the threatened loss of important advertising revenue due to stricter regulation in the European Union. In a blog post, the company explained the decision and justified it with a ruling from the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in July. It said companies should offer alternative services, “if necessary for a reasonable fee.” At the beginning of the year, the Irish data protection authority, which is responsible for the group’s European business, prohibited Meta from treating acceptance of the general terms and conditions as consent to personalized advertising. The company then replied that it wanted to explicitly ask EU users for their consent in the future.
