Insomniac Games: Criminals steal 1.6 terabtye of internals

There has been a ransomware incident at Insomniac Games. The cybercriminal group “Rhysida” claims to have copied internal data on a large scale. To prevent publication, the game developers were asked to pay a $2 million ransom. That obviously didn’t happen, now the criminals have leaked most of the data.

Insomniac Games has developed many PlayStation exclusive titles such as the recently released “Spider-Man 2.” Sony is now pursuing the economically driven strategy of later publishing the titles for the PC.

On her leaking website on the darknet, Rhysida claims to have stolen a total of more than 1.2 million files with a size of 1.67 TB. 98 percent of these are currently published. The data includes a lot of information about upcoming titles like “Wolverine”. These are huge projects for the next decade, involving several hundred million US dollars. The economic damage to Insomniac Games is currently not foreseeable.

The extensive data leak contains, among other things, information from future games and personal details of employees.

Sales figures for PC titles are also said to be included in the leak. Personal data of Insomniac employees and content from their work PCs were also published. These include screenshots from Slack chats.

How the attack took place in detail is still unclear. According to a report on Cyberdaily.au It only took the criminals around 25 minutes to upgrade themselves to domain admin in the game developer’s network.

Sony says it has started an investigation. However, there is currently no further information about this.

Large game developers have been popular targets of cyberattacks for some time. In the summer of this year, Rockstar Games was caught and the perpetrators leaked material about “GTA VI,” among other things.
