Inntal: Block processing causes a traffic jam – Bavaria

Traffic chaos threatens in the Inn Valley for the entire week – because on the Tyrolean side there is block processing at the Kufstein/Kiefersfelden border crossing. The Austrian police have been slowing down heavy goods traffic in the direction of Innsbruck since 5 a.m. on Monday morning, so that only about 300 trucks per hour can enter the country. Traffic was already backed up for a good 20 kilometers to Brannenburg early in the morning.

On the days when Tyrol “doss” the traffic, there are often kilometer-long backlogs on the A93, which have an effect as far as Irschenberg. Those who try to avoid alternative routes often find themselves stuck in traffic jams in smaller towns such as Brannenburg, Oberaudorf and Kiefersfelden.

Just last week, Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) called for a European infringement procedure – because the dispute with Tyrol about block handling has been going on for many years. “If we can’t see any change, then the only thing that will help is taking legal action through the EU.” At the burner “finally something has to move”. Tyrol, however, also argues that the Inntal and Brenner autobahns are overloaded and is demanding more effort from the German side to shift freight traffic to rail.

Every year there is a so-called dosing calendar, on which the days with block processing are announced. This year there are 38 days in total, 21 in the first half of the year and 17 in the second. Around Pentecost, traffic will only be allowed to Austria in blocks on several days.
