Initiative wants to stop food waste in restaurants – Bavaria

In the future, less food will end up in the trash in Bavaria’s taverns. A new initiative started in Munich on Thursday. Motto: “Full bins are not the best thing”.

The participating companies offer their guests variable portions for small and large appetites. Leftover food can be taken with you. In addition, good planning when shopping and preparing food in the kitchen should help prevent food from having to be thrown away.

182,000 tons of waste are generated every year from out-of-home catering in Bavaria, around half of which comes from restaurants and accommodation establishments. Bavaria’s Food Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) said at the start that they wanted to show together “that as little food as possible has to end up in the bin in Bavarian taverns”. Hosts and guests could contribute to this.

The reason for the initiative with the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association is a study by the Competence Center for Nutrition. According to this, a million tons of food are destroyed every year in the Free State, even though it is still edible. The initiative will initially be implemented by inns with the “Excellent Bavarian Cuisine” seal, it said. In the future, however, it should be expanded to all companies in Bavaria.
