Inflation – people buy cheaper – economy

The Ukraine war and the high inflation rates are causing significant changes in the shopping behavior of people in Germany. According to the latest figures from the market research company GfK, the discounters are again gaining market share at the expense of other supermarkets and specialist shops. The retail chains’ own brands are also enjoying growing popularity again. “Households react very quickly when the general conditions change significantly,” said GfK retail expert Robert Kecskes. “That was the case with the pandemic, and it’s the same now with the Ukraine war and the high inflation rate.” People are unsettled, many feel that their disposable income is shrinking – and that is having a clear impact on their shopping behavior.
