Heavy rain has caused flash floods on the Indonesian island of Java. At least five people died and several are missing. There were also floods on the island of Sulawesi, 300 houses were flooded.

Flash floods in Indonesia killed at least five people after heavy rains. Four more are still missing, said the civil protection agency. On Thursday, masses of water and debris flowed into the town of Batu on the main island of Java.

“Rescue teams are still looking for the missing and helping to clear away the rubble,” said agency spokesman Abdul Muhari. Surrounded by mountains, Batu is popular with Indonesians as a travel destination because of its cool climate.

Flooded houses in Sulawesi

Floods also occurred in Bone Bolango on the island of Sulawesi. Almost 300 houses were flooded, Muhari said. So far there have been no reports of deaths or injuries from there.

Heavy downpours and landslides are not uncommon in the Southeast Asian island nation during the rainy season, which lasts from November to March.
