Indigenous people on Instagram and TikTok: Fighting prejudice with humor

More and more indigenous young people are becoming stars on social media. A Canadian Instagrammer on his generation’s newfound confidence.

Panpipe music and birdsong sound, a young man with black braids looks into the distance from under his wide-brimmed hat. “Excuse me, Mr. Indigen,” says a voice in the video in English. “Can you share some wisdom with me?” The man with the pigtails looks at the sky and mutters broodingly. “Yes, I can share wisdom with you. The sky is blue.” A whispered “Wooow” sounds. “The leaves on the trees are…” the young man continues. “Indigenous?” the voice interrupts him. “No, green,” says the braided man. An eagle screeches in the background, the voice says, “I needed this wisdom so badly.”
