In India and Bangladesh, floods and severe storms have killed many people and forced millions more to flee their homes. The authorities expect the situation to deteriorate over the weekend.

Severe storms and flooding have claimed numerous lives in India and Bangladesh. Millions of houses were under water in both countries, according to the authorities.

According to the Ministry of Disaster Management, at least nine people died in the floods in the Indian state of Assam, and two million had to flee their homes. The Brahmaputra, one of Asia’s largest rivers, breached its levees and flooded 3,000 villages and crops. “The amount of rainfall is unprecedented,” said a worker at the meteorological station in Gauhati, the capital of Assam. The military assisted the authorities in rescuing stranded people and providing food for the homeless.

Lightning strikes in neighboring Bangladesh killed at least 21 people, police said. Four people were also killed by landslides in the port city of Chittagong. Around four million people had to leave their homes. Districts along the Indian border were hardest hit. The Flood Forecasting Center in the capital Dhaka said all rivers in the country were flooded.

There are fears that more rain could worsen the situation in both countries over the weekend.
