In the UK, pre-emptive arrests have not dampened environmental activists

By their coup, they forced the police to stop the traffic. English environmental activists from the group Just Stop Oil climbed this Monday morning on motorway gantries located on a major motorway axis in London.

This new action by the militant group came as world leaders gather at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday. It is part of the group’s campaign “to ask the government to suspend all new licenses and authorizations for oil and gas”.

A month of punchy actions

Sunday evening, however, the police arrested three activists as a preventive measure. This Monday, four other people were arrested by the authorities before the start of the action.

Just Stop Oil led a month of punchy action in London in October. Activists have thus encrusted the wax statue of King Charles at Madame Tussauds, thrown tomato soup on Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” at the National Gallery or sprayed paint on an Aston Martin dealership.

“Civil resistance is inevitable and justified. It will continue until the UK government changes course,” said a statement from the environmental group. In France, activists from Extinction Rebellion are organizing similar operations on the Paris ring road.
