The little rhino is one week old and was born in the Schwerin Zoo after a long wait. Now it explores its surroundings.

About a week after its birth, the little white rhino conquered the Schwerin Zoo his world. On Monday it explored the outdoor enclosure for the first time. Photographers and cameramen accompanied the event.

White rhinos have lived in Schwerin Zoo since 1981 – but it had never worked with offspring before. After 42 years, the time had come last Tuesday morning. A female cub was born after a gestation period of 526 days.

Southern white rhinos are currently classified as “Near Threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, according to the zoo. After the species was on the brink of extinction around 1900, around 16,000 animals live in southern Africa today. Because of poaching, the number is going back sharply.
