An investigation is open.

A fire “declared himself in an apartment in Quesnoy” around noon, this source told AFP, confirming information from The voice of the North. “The apartment was empty of occupants” so there is no “no injuries”but “the framework threatened to collapse”. According to The voice of the North, the fire broke out late in the morning, around 11:50 a.m., on the first floor of a building, surprising the residents. They found refuge on Place Saint-Michel. “We just heard an explosion, and then the flames quickly appeared”a man living on this street explained to the media. “The smoke was impressive, we could no longer stay inside, it was unbreathable, especially since we have a baby”testified another tenant.

But when firefighters arrived on site, the fire had already spread to the entire apartment and was beginning to spread to adjoining accommodation. Around 1 p.m., the situation was under control and firefighters were able to prevent the spread.

After carrying out reconnaissance in the affected apartments, first with a drone, they moved into the building and made a sad discovery around 4:40 p.m.

The circumstances of the infant’s death are currently unknown and investigations are continuing.
