In the National Assembly, LFI trapped in populist strategy

MArine Le Pen can be satisfied: by voting, Monday, October 24, the motion of censure tabled by the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes, combining the formations of the parliamentary left), the far-right deputy (Pas-de- Calais) has killed three birds with one stone: it designates Les Républicains as objective allies of the presidential majority; it shows the government that it can be a pivot of the opposition and, finally, it deeply divides the left.

The latter does not seem to be clear on the attitude to adopt towards the National Rally (RN). If this situation did not arise after the election of 89 Lepenist deputies in June, it in any case crystallized on Monday. Because several leaders of La France insoumise (LFI), engine of Nupes, marked a break with a certain tradition of the left vis-à-vis the extreme right.

Thus, after the vote of their motion of censure, leading “rebellious” regretted having lacked 50 votes to pass their text. The president of the LFI group at the AssemblyMathilde Panot, estimated : “Fifty votes. This is what he will have missed to censor Macronie. Let them take it for granted, their government is hanging by a thread. La Nupes is the only alternative to their world of doom. » Alexis Corbière (LFI, Seine-Saint-Denis) agreed: “An alternative majority exists, it’s the people! We are ready to govern. Call the people back to the polls, it’s up to them to decide. » As for Jean-Luc Mélenchon, he tweeted: “The right narrowly saves the government. It lacked 50 votes to eject the government. We are ready for succession. »

deep disagreement

It would be incongruous to imagine the parliamentarians of Nupes not voting their text on the pretext that the RN deputies do. However, if Monday’s vote draws, as LFI says, a “alternative majority” popular, the latter includes, in fact, the National Rally.

An incomprehensible postulate on the part of activists who have fought the far right since the beginning of their engagement, whose values and proposals are diametrically opposed to those of Marine Le Pen. And who are in deep disagreement on points as essential as republican values, institutions, the relationship to Islam, societal issues, economic policy or the defense of the environment.

Another incomprehensible point: the same morning, several figures on the left reproached Emmanuel Macron for having met Giorgia Meloni, the new Italian far-right Prime Minister, calling her a “fascist”. And, a few hours later, the same pretend to ignore the voices of the RN in favor of their text. For example, in his speech at the rostrum of the Assembly, Mr.me Panot did not have a word to dissociate himself from the choice of Mme The pen.
