A farmer from the southern district of Ebersberg has been sentenced to a fine of 60 daily rates. The animal rights organization PETA is now pointing this out. Last year, an eyewitness documented how a weakened mother cow and her calf were left to die on the pasture of the manager’s organic farm. According to the witness, the farmer hardly took care of the animals for days despite her tips. Photographs taken by the witness at the end of May 2021 showed that crows were already sitting on the weakened cow. According to Peta, the fact that the animals were still alive at the time was clearly evident from the occasional tail wagging. According to the witness, who had informed the police in the meantime, the cow lay on the pasture for at least two days before finally dying
At the beginning of June 2021, Peta had therefore filed a criminal complaint against the man with the Munich II public prosecutor’s office on suspicion of violating the Animal Welfare Act and demanded a ban on keeping animals. The proceedings have now ended with a penalty order, which the farmer accepted. Therefore, there was no court case.
“We are glad that there are now consequences for the farmer, because animal cruelty is not a trifle, but a criminal offence. In order to prevent animals from suffering under the care of those responsible again, we would have wished for an additional ban on keeping animals,” says Bettina Eick , Specialist for Animals in the Food Industry at Peta.
The case was known in the Ebersberg veterinary office in the summer of 2021, and Peta had also made representations here. According to a spokeswoman for the district office, the veterinarians drove to the farm on the same day, but by then the cow had already been eliminated. Some things were reminded at the time of the inspection, for example the farmer should provide proof of veterinary care.
