“I want her to know it was me.” The trailer for season 5 of Handmaid’s tale opens with a very personal declaration of war. The one that June (Elizabeth Moss) throws at Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), the wife of Fred (Joseph Fiennes), the commander of Gilead whom the former servant murdered at the end of season 4. And if the message was not not clear enough, the trailer ends with these words from June in voiceover: “Do you want to fight? Let’s go. »
After a thrilling season 4, season 5 of the series created by Bruce Miller promises action. Now a refugee in Canada, June tries, with the help of her husband Luke and her friend Moira, a former servant like her, to fight against Gilead from a distance. Within Gilead, Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) joins forces with Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), whom the trailer shows to be particularly elated, to seize power. Also in Canada, Serena will take care of her image, while the influence of Gilead begins to cross borders.
A dystopia that increasingly takes on the air of reality
The Handmaid’s Tale (The Scarlet Maid, in French) describes a world where most women have become sterile. In the United States, which has become a religious and patriarchal dictatorship, and renamed “Gilead”, the few fertile women are reduced to slavery and placed at the disposal of military commanders. The heroine of the series, June, is thus placed with Commander Fred Waterford and his wife Serena.
The series is inspired by the book of the same name, written by Canadian writer Margaret Atwood in 1985. With the rise of extremism in the United States, and in particular the recent decision of the Supreme Court which revoked the federal right to abortion, the dystopian series is increasingly taking on the air of future reality.
Margaret Atwood has also posted a picture of her recently where she wore a mug with the following inscription: “I told you so” (“I told you so”).
