Nearly 300 firefighters are still on site battling the flames. More than 1,700 hectares have been burned.

The fire that has ravaged hundreds of hectares of moorland in the Monts d’Arrée since Monday is still ongoing on Wednesday July 20. But “the progression of the fire is slowing down and the situation is under control”explained the prefecture of Finistère in a press release taking stock of the situation at 8 a.m.

Some 278 firefighters and 60 firefighting vehicles were on site to fight the flames, according to the prefecture. Several roads were still closed to traffic. The burned area was 1,725 ​​hectares at this time, compared to 1,700 hectares the day before at 5 p.m. The images show charred moorland and a moonscape.

In total, 500 people had to be evacuated because of the fire which started in the town of Brasparts (Finistère), in the heart of the Monts d’Arrée, in a natural site known for its biodiversity. The town of Botmeur was notably evacuated by the authorities. Accommodation centers have been set up in Sizun and Landivisiau.
