In-house new engine to reduce dependency on third-party engines

As the Japanese publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment confirmed, the company has been working on a new engine since 2019. This should not only enable extensive triple-A productions. At the same time, it is about reducing dependency on third-party engines and corresponding software.

As Bandai Namco Entertainment’s engine unit director Katsuuke Horiuchi confirmed in an interview with the Japanese “Automation Media”, the Japanese publisher has been working on its own engine for quite a while.

According to Horiuchi, several goals are being pursued with the development of the new engine. On the one hand, the new engine should enable the in-house developers and partners of Bandai Namco Entertainment to realize extensive triple-A productions. At the same time, those responsible want to reduce dependency on third-party engines or third-party software.

New engine in development since 2019

“The reason for in-house production is that we want to continue having the technological capabilities to create a solid foundation ourselves, rather than leaving the foundation to other companies’ game engines,” Horiuchi elaborated, noting that the decision , to rely on its own engine in the future, was made in 2018. Full production of the new graphics engine, in turn, began in 2019.

“I think the development was decided around 2018,” it said. “First of all, it was a guideline to only prepare the timeline for a game framework and develop tools when there is sufficient space. […] However, at that time it coincided with the development of other major games and development was slow. After that, the concept of the game engine was verified by several people and based on this prototyping, full-scale development started around 2019.”

Since the new engine is still in development, projects based on Bandai Namco Entertainment’s in-house graphics engine will still be a few years away.
