The question of immigration will, without a doubt, be one of the themes of the next campaign for the 2024 European elections. The rare – but impressive – massive arrivals of migrants on the European coasts, as on the island Italian city of Lampedusa in mid-September, the shipwrecks and the deaths will still be in the news between now and the vote. To try to find a solution to these repeated episodes since 2015, the European Commission has put an asylum and immigration pact on the table. A sprawling project, made up of several texts in negotiation with the European Council (the member states) and the European Parliament.
At the Strasbourg headquarters of the European Parliament, 20 minutes went to ask three MEPs for their opinion: Manon Aubry, from France Insoumise; Fabienne Keller, from Renaissance; François-Xavier Bellamy, from Les Républicains. What is their priority when it comes to asylum and immigration? Do they think, like the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, that the agreement for the management of migrants signed between the Union and Tunisia should be a model? And what is their idea of European solidarity in this matter?
