Images of “largest terrorist tunnel ever discovered” shared by IDF

The Israeli army says it has discovered a 4km long tunnel whose entrance is located a few hundred meters from the highly controlled Erez border crossing. BFMTV was able to go there.

The underground network used by Hamas in Gaza continues to surprise. More than two months after the start of the war between Israel and the terrorist group, the IDF shared images of the “largest terrorist tunnel ever discovered.”

BFMTV was able to visit a small portion of the 4 kilometer long underground, accompanied by Israeli soldiers. We were able to see that it is a passage large enough to accommodate vehicles, with a height of two meters and a similar width.

“The tunnel has several branches and divisions that form a wide and branched tunnel network. Along the route there are sewers, an electrical, communications and telephone network,” explains the Israeli army in a press release. Weapons caches or food supplies were found there.

A multi-million dollar project

This complex, probably used by Hamas to move out of sight, was built discreetly. As BFMTV was able to observe, its entrance is located only a few hundred meters from the highly controlled Erez border post. Israel had no knowledge of the construction site.

“According to our estimates, Hamas has invested millions of dollars in the underground network of the Gaza Strip,” the IDF said in its press release.

This uncovered portion would only represent a small piece of a sprawling network, as explained by General Jérôme Pellistrandi, defense consultant for BFMTV. Hamas reportedly has a “kind of underground spider’s web, a network of 500 to 800km of more or less sophisticated tunnels.”
