A man stabbed a schoolgirl in Illerkirchberg and seriously injured another – triggering a nationwide debate. Now he has admitted the deeds, as the investigators say.

The suspect in the knife attack in Illerkirchberg (Baden-Württemberg) has confessed to stabbing a girl several times with a knife. This was shared on Tuesday by the police headquarters and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ulm. However, the motive for the act remained open; For investigative reasons, no information could be given for the time being, according to the authorities.

The 27-year-old alleged perpetrator, an asylum seeker from Eritrea, was therefore questioned on January 5th. Previously he had been silent. Now he admitted the crime and also stated that he had not known the two girls before.

DNA traces convict perpetrators from Illerkirchberg

According to the police, the information corresponds to the results of the trace analysis. DNA traces of the killed 14-year-old were found on both the suspected knife and the man’s clothing. DNA material from the suspect himself was also found on the murder weapon.

A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured in the knife attack on December 5 and later died in a clinic. The victim’s 13-year-old girlfriend was also seriously injured. However, according to the police, she has now been able to leave the hospital.

Suspect in custody

The alleged perpetrator is in custody in a prison hospital. He is charged with murder and attempted murder. The authorities said the man, who has been in Germany since 2016, was not previously aware of any acts of violence.

The act not only shook the affected community, but also caused nationwide horror and a flare-up of political debates. The parents of the two girls called for the crime not to be used for hate speech. Many politicians agreed. However, there was also criticism of German asylum policy.

Baden-Württemberg’s Interior Minister Thomas Strobl spoke out in favor of deporting certain perpetrators. Anyone who, as a refugee, murders a person and seriously injures another person in the country that offers them protection, has decided not to want to stay in this country, said Strobl.
