Ikke Hipgold: “Only if you exaggerate will you be heard and seen”

Ikke Hipgold, the man behind the scandalous song “Layla”, releases a new single with “Bumsbar” – including a video in which the hit producer can be nailed to the cross. In the interview, Hipgold, alias Matthias Distel, talks about his strange business model, his anger at the Catholic Church and the power of provocation.

Mr. Distel, last year as a producer you brought the song “Layla” to the Ballermann and German folk festivals and brought the country a week-long discussion about cancel culture. Municipalities have banned the song from being played because it allegedly disparages sex workers. For your new single “Bumsbar”, which you released under your stage name Ikke Hipgold together with Schürze and DJ Robin, you let yourself be nailed to the cross and took on the Catholic Church. Is every scandal okay with you, the main thing is that you land another summer hit?
