Ifo Institute – More short-time work again – Economy

Contrary to the overall economic trend, the number of short-time workers in German industry is increasing as a result of the war in Ukraine. In March it increased by 18,000 to 144,000, as determined by the Munich Ifo Institute on the basis of its company surveys and figures from the Federal Employment Agency. In the export-dependent auto industry alone, the number of short-time workers increased from 36,000 to 43,000, which corresponds to 4.5 percent of the workforce there. “These are the first signs of an intensification of the delivery bottlenecks,” said Ifo expert Stefan Sauer on the development in the industry. “The problem already existed, but it was made even worse by the Ukraine war.”
