The German national ice hockey team has no chance against the favored Finns. Even when you are outnumbered, your opponent is superior.
The German Ice Hockey Association’s announced application to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup did not provide any momentum for national coach Jeff MacLeod’s team. Germany had won the opening game against Denmark two days earlier 1-0.
At the end of the tournament, which was combined with men for the first time, Germany will face the Czech Republic, third in the World Cup, on Saturday (2.30 p.m./Magentasport). If the Czechs manage to win against the team led by captain Daria Gleissner, they would have won the first women’s edition of the Germany Cup. The hosts are in third place ahead of the goalless and winless Danes.
Finns score several times despite being outnumbered
For ten minutes, the German players and strong goalkeeper Chiara Schultes were able to prevent the dominant third-placed team from 2021 from taking the lead in front of 1,667 spectators. Then Sanni Vanhanen (10th minute) and Noora Tulus (14th) made it 0-2.
At the 2023 World Cup in Brampton, Canada, Finland won 3-0, but in Landshut they had significantly more desire to score goals. In the second round, the Northern Europeans scored three times despite being outnumbered. Viivi Vainikka (23rd), Pauliina Salonen (25th) and Julia Liikala (29th) increased the score to 0:5 with one less player on the ice.
After conceding goals number six and seven, MacLeod’s team at least managed to stop the Finns’ scoring drive for the time being. Theresa Wagner scored to make it 1:7 (50th). 20 seconds later, Kiira Yrjänen made the final score 1:8.
