Rescue workers responded to two serious accidents in northern Bavaria within 15 minutes. A total of 14 vehicles were involved in the collisions on icy federal roads, and two people were seriously injured.

Eight people were injured in two pile-ups due to slippery roads in Middle Franconia this evening, two of them seriously. As the police announced, around 5:50 p.m. a 35-year-old driver lost control of his car on a snow-covered road near Heilsbronn in the Ansbach district due to inappropriate speed. He ran into oncoming traffic on the federal highway, first collided with a car and then crashed into three other cars.

The person who caused the accident was seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital by a rescue helicopter. A 46-year-old driver was also taken to hospital with serious injuries. Two other people involved in the accident suffered minor injuries and were treated on an outpatient basis. The police estimate the damage to the five cars involved at around 100,000 euros.

15 minutes later there was a pile-up of ten cars on a bridge near Gunzenhausen, also on a federal highway. Here, too, a driver lost control of his car due to slippery ice and skidded, the police said.

In order to avoid a collision, a truck driving behind the car initiated emergency braking and came to a stop across the bridge. Eight other drivers were unable to stop their cars in time, resulting in further collisions. Four people involved were slightly injured, two of whom were taken to hospital for further examinations as a precaution. Due to the rescue work, the federal highway was completely closed for almost two hours.

In Saxony, too, several cars slid into each other in the evening. In Leipzig, a vehicle slowed down because of an ambulance and turned sideways on a slippery road. Three more cars pulled up. Five people were slightly injured, the police said.
