Almost half of the skilled workers positions in German companies remained open in the first half of 2022. This is shown by a study by the employment agency. The rate has almost doubled in the past ten years.

Almost half of all companies in Germany were unable to fill positions for skilled workers in the first half of 2022. This emerges from a study presented on Friday by the Nuremberg Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB).

While around 45 percent of the positions for skilled workers remained unfilled across all companies, the figure was as high as 62 percent in small companies. In large companies, the proportion of unfilled positions for skilled workers was lower at 24 percent.

The construction and catering industries were particularly affected

The study also revealed major differences between different sectors. The construction industry was particularly affected, where almost two thirds of all positions could not be filled. The need for skilled workers there is also particularly high. Twelve percent of all skilled workers in Germany are in demand in the construction industry.

Many positions also remained unfilled in the accommodation and catering sectors. The proportion was lowest in public administration, where one in ten positions remained unfilled.

According to the study, the need for skilled workers in Germany is higher than it has been in ten years. Overall, 40 percent of all companies reported a need for skilled workers in the first half of 2022. Ten years ago the rate was 28 percent. The basis is an annual survey by the IAB of around 15,000 companies.
