Did you think you would one day take over the role of Baron Zemo?
At the time of Civil War, it was not planned, no. But it’s always a good sign if they don’t kill you and lock you in a jail cell instead. (laughs) I always thought that one day Zemo would be able to run away. It remained to be seen when and how? The phone call from Marvel took me by surprise, but I was excited to revisit the character. Especially from reading the scripts, I realized that they had different, interesting things in mind for Zemo. Like showing off his aristocratic past or even his iconic costume with the purple mask.
It’s more iconic than the mask now, there’s your little nightclub dance in Episode 2, which became an internet meme.
I know I know. (laughs) Who would have believed it ? It’s a weird choice you make in the moment, and then it sticks. A total improvisation, it was not in the script. But I thought it was appropriate for Zemo to do a few dance steps, he who had been sitting in prison for so many years. He had to decompress a bit. And it was also a good opportunity for him to annoy Sam and Bucky, to see their reactions. Between us, I was sure that the scene would be cut during the editing, but they kept it and so much the better.
Does the series show the character in a new light, lighter, funnier and therefore more surprising?
Marvel is very good at that, at injecting good humor into very serious films. I had not had the chance to exploit this facet of the character in Civil War, although it was a pleasure to play a real villain, the old-fashioned way. We just didn’t have enough time to show anything else. That’s why I’m excited to explore that lighter tone and that sense of humor, of irony. The scripts were great, and I took the movement, and keep pushing on the set. With Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, we played that, we improvised a lot.
