Hunger in Gaza: “No one here will be full anymore” – politics

The children and babies have sunken cheeks, skinny arms and legs, and they stare into space: the pictures from the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza are going around the world these days. “For us, every day feels like the end of the world. We have to watch the children lose weight instead of gaining weight,” says doctor Alaa Abu Qamar South German newspaper on the phone, children screaming in the background. “Most mothers here don’t have a milk supply, they can neither breastfeed their own children nor breastfeed others,” says the 47-year-old. Pre-feeding, diapers – all in short supply. Many babies suffer from skin rashes. When there is enough powder for a bottle, it is divided among the newborns. “Nobody here gets full anymore,” says Abu Qamar. A good day is when you can give the mothers two dates. Sometimes they let their newborns suck it.
