Humanist and bridge builder: A volume of essays in honor of the historian Jürgen Zarusky – Politics

The Munich historian and Russia expert Jürgen Zarusky died five years ago. A volume of essays honors his work and continues it. About an extraordinary person who combined science and empathy.

So five years now. It was no longer possible to ask how he assessed Vladimir Putin’s brutal attack on Ukraine; why the Germans actually know so little about the history of Ukraine and even less about the atrocities committed by the Germans there, in Russia, in Belarus and in Transnistria during the war of annihilation from 1941 to 1945. And above all, there was a missing voice that always represented the victims of injustice and knew how to focus on violence. The historian and Russia expert Jürgen Zarusky died five years ago – a “festschrift” was recently published in which close companions, colleagues and friends reflect, appreciate and continue his work.
