The P series is dead, long live Pura: Huawei has confirmed that the long-awaited P70 Pro will be launched as the Pura 70 Pro. Particularly interesting is the new top model, the Pura 70 Ultra, whose main camera extends out of the housing.
Huawei has officially unveiled the Pura 70 series. However, the Chinese company did not hold a major launch event for this. Instead, the smartphones were announced in a “silent launch” without much advance notice. With the Pura 70 series, Huawei is also burying the previous P series. At the moment, the smartphones are only available in China; there is currently no information about a global launch.
Pura 70 series with 5G and its own chip
The Pura 70 series also marks an important step because Huawei is no longer dependent on US technologies for production. Accordingly, the manufacturer installs its own processors and even its own 5G modem. However, we have to treat this information with caution, as Huawei does not want to go into these two points in the technical details.
Camera: Differences in detail
A total of four models belong to the Pura 70 series: The Pura 70, Pura 70 Pro, Pro+ and Ultra. The difference between the Pro models and the Ultra is mainly in the details – or more precisely in the camera. The Pro versions each have a 50 MP “super focus” main camera with variable aperture (f1.4 – f/4.0) and Sony IMX989 sensor. There is also a 12.5 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 48 MP super-focus macro telephoto camera.
Pura 70 Ultra: Main camera moves out of the housing
When it comes to the camera, the Pura 70 Ultra can differentiate itself a little more from the other models. Huawei also uses a 50 MP superfocus main camera with an aperture of f/1.6 to f/4.0, but it still has a few special features to offer. The 1-inch camera has sensor stabilization, OIS and a rotation mechanism.
Like a professional camera, the sensor slides slightly out of the housing and is accompanied by a “professional mechanical sound”. The mechanism is said to be designed for at least 300,000 of these predecessors. There is also a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 50 MP super-focus macro-telephoto camera. As with the other models, the latter enables a 3.5x optical and 100x digital zoom.
Charging with up to 100 watts
On the front of the Pro, Pro+ and Ultra there is a 6.8-inch OLED display with 1,260 x 2,844 pixels that achieves a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The smartphones are rounded off by a 5,050 mAh (Pro(+)) or a 5,200 mAh battery. Charging is possible via cable with up to 100 watts or wirelessly with 80 watts. The devices are 162.6 x 75.1 x 8.4 mm in size and weigh 220 grams.
Personally, I find the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra with its extendable main camera particularly interesting. After all, this is a small peculiarity that is not otherwise found on any current smartphone. I’m at least curious to see how the Pura 70 series will fare against the competition from Samsung, Apple & Co. It’s a real shame that Huawei is no longer represented in Europe.
