HTPC motherboard defective and gaming PC GPU defective – looking for a replacement

Hello everyone!

after reading computerbase for YEARS, I created an account TODAY, after I just lost my graphics card (Radeon 7870 GHz) in the gaming PC and 3 weeks before that probably my HTPC mainboard.

I’m actually quite firm in the matter – thanks to ComputerBase-, but I can’t make up my mind or I’m afraid of doing nonsense, so here’s the double question about HTPC mainboard and separate GPU.
Should it be necessary, I’ll unpack it and make an extra post in the GPU section.

Thanks for opinions and input,
Greetings c-freak-p

[Bitte fülle den folgenden Fragebogen unbedingt vollständig aus, damit andere Nutzer dir effizient helfen können. Danke! ]

1. Do you want to play on PC?

  • Which games exactly?
HTPC: Couch co-op stuff with controllers under Linux (Stardew Valley) or ancient under Wine (Rayman’s Raving Rabbits)
Gaming PC: under Windows mainly older stuff due to lack of GPU (C&C, Dungeons 2/3, Grim Dawn, Racedriver Grid, old Need for Speed, Witcher 1+2, all MassEffect 1+2, Mirrors Edge (2), .. .) or newer small indie games (Gris, Hoa, Aer, Hob, …)
  • which resolution?
Full HD is enough for both
  • Ultra/high/medium/low graphics settings?
it should be nice 🙂 If things don’t go well anymore, the price will be reduced.
  • Is 30 enough for you? FPS or should it be 60 or even 144 FPS?
HTPC: pretty much doesn’t matter, I come from an Athlon 5350 and it was fast enough (except for Stardew Valley’s split screen after the last update)
Gaming PC: at least 60 fps would be nice, but the screen is not faster than 60.

2. Would you like to use the PC for image/music/video editing or CAD? As a hobby or are you a professional? What software will you use?

HTPC: No, nothing more special than messing up an audio track in Audacity.
Gaming PC: Gimp, Inkscape, Handbrake, Audacity, occasionally Blender under Linux; under Windows nothing in the direction. Only play there.

3. Do you have special requirements or wishes (overclocking, a particularly quiet PC, RGB lighting, …)?
Both: It should be AMD.
I would like to keep the case.
The HTPC should be as energy efficient as possible (low TDP, Athlon 3000G anyone?)
On the gaming PC, I wanted to hit AMD’s 7000 series mid-range release next year if there weren’t any moon prices. I thought I’d manage to switch from the 7870 to the next 7870. Well… So maybe a (used) transition card (RX6650/RX6600?)

4. How many and which monitors do you want to use? Number, model, resolution, refresh rate (Hertz)? Is FreeSync (AMD) or G-Sync (Nvidia) supported? (Please with a link to the manufacturer or price comparison!)
HTPC: 1 monitor Nec E505, 50”, Full HD, 60Hz
Gaming PC: 1 monitor, 24”, FullHD, IPS, 60Hz

5. Do you still have an old PC, parts of which could be reused? (Please with links to the specifications from the manufacturer or price comparison!)
The mainboard of the HTPC is probably broken – it simply goes out after a short time and the LAN LED flickers. So CPU+Board+RAM should be exchanged.

The graphics card of the gaming PC is probably defective – goes out under GPU load after a brief display of a yellow stripe pattern. So the GPU needs to be replaced.

Other excess hardware:

6. How much money are you willing to spend?

HTPC: ~350 for CPU, RAM, board
Gaming PC: ~300 if it’s enough for a while, or as little as possible, used is also ok.

7. When do you want to buy the PC? As soon as possible or can you wait a few weeks/months?
Gladly soon with the gaming PC
HTPC would also be good if it’s up and running again by Christmas.

8. Do you want to assemble the PC yourself or have it assembled (by the shop or by volunteer helpers)?
Even is the man – when it comes to PCs.
