HSV defended its lead in the 2nd division. On Saturday, Hamburg won 1-0 (0-0) at Hannover 96 – and inflicted the first defeat of the season on Lower Saxony.

The celebrated hero from the point of view of the Hanseatic League was Bakery Jatta, who scored the goal of the day with a solid low shot in the 69th minute. A good quarter of an hour earlier, central defender Guilherme Ramos was sent off after an emergency brake against 96 striker Nicolo Tresoldi (53′). For the Hanseatic League it was the third win in four games. With ten points now, it’s the best start to the season for coach Tim Walter’s team under his leadership. HSV defender Miro Muheim was “overwhelmed” after the game. It was incredibly cool how the team defended.”

Goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was happy about “defending everything away with consistency and enthusiasm, as we assumed today. As a team, we took a step to get that over the finish line.”

“You really shouldn’t be left empty-handed after a game like that.”
Hanover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler

On the other side, Hanover keeper Ron-Robert Zieler was disappointed after the narrow defeat: “We demanded everything from HSV today and played a really good game. You really shouldn’t be empty-handed after a game like that.”

Coach Stefan Leitl’s team managed to disrupt HSV’s combination game right from the start by playing aggressively against the ball. After nine minutes, the guests were able to playfully evade the pressure from Lower Saxony for the first time and it immediately became dangerous: Ludovit Reis landed the ball at Jean-Luc Dompé, whose cross Ransford Königsdörffer narrowly missed in the middle. Six minutes later, striker Robert Glatzel had the next Hamburg chance with a turning shot.

Hannover grippy, HSV with better scoring chances

But the hosts seemed more gripping. Enzo Leopold tested Heuer Fernandes with a treacherous free kick (22nd). The guests played – as in the first Away game of the season in Karlsruhe – a bit jittery and could still have taken the lead. Reis captured a ball but failed from 16 yards out at 96 goalkeeper Zieler. Defender Phil Neumann cleared Glatzel’s follow-up shot for his already beaten keeper (34′).

The best Hamburg chance of the first half two minutes later: Königsdörffer headed a Dompé cross just wide. Now it was back and forth: On the other side, Heuer Fernandes directed a Tresoldi arc lamp onto the crossbar (40′) and saved against Derrick Köhn (45’+3′). The end of a goalless but fast-paced and high-intensity first half.

Ramos sees red, Jatta scores outnumbered

Six minutes after the restart, Königsdörffer had another chance. Marcel Halstenberg blocked heavily. The 96 central defender made a good game anyway. With long balls, he repeatedly put his teammates in the limelight – and put the Hamburg defense under pressure. In the 53rd minute, after such a pass, Tresoldi escaped from Ramos, who only knew how to help himself with one foul – red.

And the Lower Saxony almost immediately capitalized on the numerical majority. But Tresoldi was unlucky with the batten for the second time in the evening (59th). And the hamburgers? Defended consistently and countered well to lead when outnumbered: Glatzel brought down a high ball with great technique and Reis got the ball to Jatta, who hit the corner powerfully from 17 meters (69th).

Hanover can’t think of anything else, HSV defends confidently

The hosts were shocked, the Hanseatic League prevented deep passes with densely staggered rows – and the high crosses of Lower Saxony either sailed out or were cleared by the Hamburg defense with ease. And so the team of coach Walter and the 20,000 or so traveling HSV fans celebrated a victory with a man down.
