Quite unromantically, seagulls help themselves to fresh rolls and ice cream from the promenade visitors, so it can be heard from Wilhelmshaven to Heringsdorf. What has not been tried to prevent the animals from pouncing on the snacks of the tourists. In the Baltic Sea resort of Kühlungsborn, for example, seagulls screamed in panic. However, this only scares the animals away for a short time. And since it is known that the problem is man-made, feeding the birds is forbidden in numerous holiday resorts – in Cuxhaven a fine of up to 5000 euros can even be due.
Another method of deterrence has been established on Heligoland. Pennant chains in the colors of Heligoland hang across the streets. For the animals that are not deterred by green, red and white, the very last means of defense is used: small umbrellas that are stretched over the food. This also helps against unromantic shooting weather.
