How to adopt a wood effect wall?
Paneling and wooden battens are affordable materials and relatively easy to install yourself: they therefore constitute two classic solutions for dressing a wall. However, there are a multitude of alternatives for adopting a wooden wall at home.
Suitable for all budgets, non-woven wallpaper is the simplest solution for adopting a wooden wall at home. It imitates both the batten wall and the paneling. Installation is also within everyone’s reach – including people who have never DIYed.
The alternative to wallpaper is flexible coverings. Imitation wood wall linoleum is a first option. There is also a smart alternative: adhesive paneling strips. Although they are easy to cut and install, they require a perfectly flat support. This solution is therefore not necessarily suitable for renovations.
For an equally cozy, but more contemporary look, you may prefer wood-effect vinyl wall tiles, which offer more choice than paneling strips.
The brick slips benefit from their 3D effect, which makes them extremely realistic. Generally made of polystyrene, they are light, easy to cut, assemble and glue. However, they are thicker than linoleum or wallpaper type coverings: a criterion that must be taken into account, for example if you want to dress a wall with a niche or a window: additional finishes will be required.
The decorative panels are also characterized by their relief. If they can imitate paneling and battens, they can also create a real marquetry effect.
The panels are not only appreciated for their very convincing look: they can be very useful in improving comfort at home. Think, for example, of wood-effect acoustic panels, which help warm up the decor while improving sound insulation. Practical, especially in the living room, where the television is generally located.
Porcelain stoneware tiles have the particularity of perfectly imitating all materials – especially wood. A now classic alternative to parquet flooring, imitation wood tiles also adorn the walls. While it obviously works in living rooms such as the living room or kitchen, it is particularly recommended in bathrooms. We love it to dress up the kitchen splashback, we love it to transform the shower into a cocooning space. Chevron pattern or classic paneling, light pine or walnut wood, it offers an interesting choice of designs.
What finish should you choose for a wood effect wall?
Wallpaper, tiles or paneling offer many possibilities in terms of aesthetics. To create a wood effect on the wall, it is therefore necessary to decide: which look to choose? A light wood species is both warm and bright, and it has the advantage of resisting all trends. So this is the safest option. But nothing stops you from opting for a more original wood effect covering.
White wood is an interesting option in an interior that lacks a little brightness. It is also a “must have” if you love seaside decoration. The trendy alternative is burnt-effect black wood. Bringing maximum character to the decor, it perfectly warms up a very contemporary interior. It also looks great in a neo-industrial or ethnic decor.
Tiles and wallpaper perfectly imitate wood, but also stone, which opens the door wide to creativity. So think about the two-material effect: a bold approach, which gives a lot of personality to your interior.
A wood effect on the wall: the DIY option
There is a wide range of materials available for adopting wood effect walls in your home and, for the most part, they are easy enough to install so that you do not have to call in a professional to install them. If you dream of a more authentic wooden wall, you can embark on a more ambitious DIY: a wall made from reclaimed wood.
Old boards and pallets bring a rustic or industrial twist to the decor. To succeed, use them to decorate the accent wall of the bedroom or living room. If the pallets are generally straight, the recovery boards are often of different dimensions and thicknesses, which allows you to create an interesting 3D effect. The trick then consists of fixing the battens to the wall, and nailing the boards to them.
