How the large Munich demonstration came to an end – Munich

Since the accident at the Love Parade in Duisburg, the security authorities have become more aware of when large crowds come together. On Sunday it quickly became clear: the demo simply couldn’t take place.

The police and fire brigade quickly realized on Sunday that the large demonstration against right-wing extremism planned in front of the Victory Gate in Schwabing could not take place as planned due to the unexpectedly large crowd of more than 100,000 people. Because of increasing security concerns as the meeting progressed, they ultimately advised the organizers to call off the demonstration – which they did. The fact that the police had intervened and spoken out would have been “just the second step,” said Damian Kania, deputy press chief of the Munich police.
