Everyone could hear this announcement: “I expect that in the future we will be able to set the clock by the train again,” said the liberal Transport Minister Volker Wissing this week. The older ones will perhaps still remember how punctually the trains used to run. It’s now a disaster: Deutsche Bahn has been struggling with major problems for many years, the notorious delays are the biggest annoyance for train drivers, plus missed connections, full trains and poor comfort. Deutsche Bahn’s punctuality figures have continued to fall since the beginning of the year. The nine-euro ticket is intended to inspire many to take the train, but at the same time it exacerbates the problems.
