The relationship between Sigmar Gabriel, the former Federal Foreign Minister, and Angela Merkel was not always as harmonious as it has been in recent times. When Gabriel was still in office, he accused the Chancellor of “a previously unknown level of mendacity” and covered her with serious accusations, for example when asked who was to blame for the failed G20 summit in Hamburg . Now, a few years later, the anger seems to have subsided. In April 2020, when the Corona crisis was just brewing, he wrote to the “dear Mrs. Chancellor” and said he was “pretty glad” that she was “on deck”.
