The rent index has not only been a controversial issue since its most recent publication on Wednesday, which is interpreted very differently in Munich. While Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) speaks of a “rent increase index” that automatically drives up apartment rents, Rudolf Stürzer, chairman of the landlords’ association Haus und Grund, considers it a “rent reduction index” that blocks justified price increases.
