How Predator went on the warpath for a prequel

The Predator, we know it since 1987 and John McTiernan’s film. How did he land on Earth? This is the question answered Prey by Dan Trachtenber. The director of 10 Cloverfield Laneavailable Disney +, this Friday, revisits the saga with as much intelligence as efficiency and gives an exciting history lesson on top of the market.

It was in 1719 in a Comanche tribe that the extraterrestrial warrior with sharp teeth and dreadlocks attacked the human race for the first time. “I have been fascinated by the Predator since the first film, explains the director to 20 minutess. I wanted to pay homage to him with this prequel. The fifth part of the alien’s adventures makes the most of Canada’s sublime landscapes to unfold his confrontation against a courageous young woman (Amber Midthunder, well known to fans of the series Legion and Roswell: New Mexico) determined to impose arms in hand.

A tribute to the Comanches

Prey was also a way to pay homage to the Comanches, insists Dan Trachtenberg, and to highlight their civilization. Some of the dialogue was therefore written in their language while producer Jhane Myers, herself of Comanche origin, ensured the accuracy of their representation. “It’s a chance to teach the world about our people through a franchise like Predator,” said the latter to 20 minutes. Comanche historians and dignitaries took part in the production, which brings added interest and increased veracity to this well-crafted sci-fi film.

A heroine who tries to escape both the clichés imposed on her by her status as a woman and the belligerent ET is also a success bringing new blood to the Predator who had a slight tendency to become anemic. “Renewing the franchise while remaining faithful to it was our idea,” insists Dan Trachtenberg. His passion for the saga is obvious which makes Prey very nice despite a few drops in pace. Instructive without being didactic, this prequel has assets to seduce both SF lovers and anyone who wants to know more about the Comanches.
