Malle is only once a year? That’s what many people think and book their summer vacation there. This also increases prices in popular places. There are cheap alternatives.

No matter whether on the Italian Adriatic coast, on Mallorca or in the Scandinavian cities – already at the beginning of the summer season it is clear that mass tourism is long gone. Around the well-known sights and the most beautiful natural spots of the established holiday resorts throughout Europe is teeming with tourists. Not only does this cause occasional stress, it also leads to rising prices in places where everyone is.

Reason enough for many vacationers to look around for alternatives to the well-known classics. According to a recent study by the travel portal “Skyscanner”, 58 percent of Germans are willing to exchange their preferred travel destination for an underestimated alternative if it would save them money.

And since 38 percent of those surveyed do not yet know where to go this summer, the portal has selected cheaper holiday destinations for July and August 2023 based on the 20 most popular destinations in the search queries for the summer of 2022. Especially with four alternatives, tourists can save a lot of money.

Proven travel destinations and their cheaper alternatives

Asturias instead of Fuerteventura

Asturias is located on the north coast of the Spanish mainland and, despite its dream beaches and the varied nature of the so-called “Green Coast”, is not yet one of the most popular regions in Spain. Here holidaymakers can still experience deserted beaches and hike along the coast – and much cheaper than on a trip to Fuerteventura. Holidaymakers can get to the popular island from Düsseldorf in July and August for 230 euros, and a return flight to the lesser-known Asturias costs 80 euros.

Vilnius instead of Rome

“The Rome of the East” – that’s what locals like to say about the Lithuanian city of Vilnius. So why not visit the still very unknown counterpart of the Italian capital of culture instead of the real Rome? As one of the oldest historic old towns in Europe, there are numerous buildings and sights to discover. And by the way, the Baltic States are among the cheapest travel destinations on the continent. This is also reflected in the flight prices: a return flight from Berlin to Rome costs 105 euros, and passengers can travel to Vilnius for as little as 55 euros.

Saranda instead of Corfu

Albania is slowly but surely turning into a real insider tip when it comes to a quiet and natural holiday within Europe, which is also extremely affordable. If you are thinking about a trip to the Greek holiday island of Corfu, you should consider taking the ferry from there to Saranda. The Albanian coastal town is the perfect base for exploring the Riviera. Compared to Corfu, holidaymakers there save on accommodation, food and activities. The return flight from Hamburg to Corfu costs 190 euros in July, and the ferry to Saranda costs 20 euros.

Chioggia instead of Venice

If you want to save, you don’t have to travel far in Italy. Chioggia is located at the southern end of the Venice Lagoon and is commonly known as “Little Venice”. This is mainly due to the fact that the small town also offers the charm of Venice, with the bridges, the canals and the narrow streets – only it is not nearly as crowded as its big sister. It’s no wonder that the cost of living and accommodation are a lot cheaper there. The return flight from Hamburg to Venice costs 230 euros in summer – from the airport you drive another 60 kilometers to Chioggia.

The data analysis is based on the search results on the portal for the respective travel destinations on June 21, 2023. Prices are subject to change. For the study, the portal also asked 1,000 people about their travel plans and analyzed search queries from January to June 2023.
