The EU wants to crack down on oligarchs who supported Putin. The federal government sounds much more moderate – although at least two men on the sanctions list have considerable assets in Germany.

EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen sounded very combative in the European Parliament on Tuesday. Russian oligarchs who support the ruler Vladimir Putin will be dealt with harshly. Yachts, expensive cars, luxury homes and other assets, “we will freeze all of them”. The EU issued a corresponding regulation on Monday evening. It is intended to meet EU-wide oligarchs who own companies and villas here, have well-stocked bank accounts or other assets.
